  • Kuumba Academy Charter School (KACS) Bus Behavior Contract
Grounded in the Nguzo Saba: Our Core Values of Excellence, Integrity, and Collective Responsibility

At Kuumba Academy, we believe that every space a student enters—including the school bus—is an extension of our learning village. Riding the school bus is a privilege that comes with the responsibility to demonstrate respect, unity, self-discipline, and care for others.

All students must follow the guidelines outlined in the KACS Student Success Manual and Code of Conduct while riding the school bus, including travel to and from school and during any school-sponsored activity. Students and families are expected to uphold the values of Kuumba Academy and the regulations of the Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) and the Delaware Department of Transportation (DDOT).

    Purpose (Nia) of This Contract
This contract exists to promote safe, respectful, and community-centered bus behavior rooted in Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility). The school bus is a shared environment that requires each rider to contribute positively for the safety and well-being of all.

Failure to meet the expectations outlined below may result in the loss of transportation privileges. Families will be responsible for transporting their student if this privilege is revoked.

    Student Commitment to Excellence
As a Kuumba student, I agree to ride the bus with Umoja (Unity), Imani (Faith), and Kuumba (Creativity), and to the following expectations:

I WILL remain seated throughout the ride to ensure safety for myself and others. (Ujima)
I WILL follow the instructions of the driver and bus aide respectfully. (Umoja, Kujichagulia)
I WILL keep my hands, feet, and belongings to myself and respect the personal space of others. (Umoja, Imani)
I WILL keep all parts of my body and objects inside the bus at all times. (Ujima)
I WILL clean up after myself and take my belongings and trash when I exit the bus. (Kuumba, Ujamaa)
I WILL use kind and appropriate language and actions at all times. (Imani, Nia)
I WILL strive to reflect Kuumba’s core values with pride and consistency. (Kujichagulia)

    Bus Infraction Consequences
Discipline is a form of restoration, not just punishment. Our goal is always to guide students toward growth and accountability.

    1st Write-Up = Lunch Detention
    2nd Write-Up = After School Detention
    3rd Write-Up = 1-Day Bus Suspension
    4th Write-Up = 2-Day Bus Suspension
5th Write-Up = Loss of Bus Privileges for the Remainder of the School Year
Students who receive repeated referrals may be placed on a formal Bus Behavior Contract. Parents/guardians will be contacted and involved in all steps of the restorative process.

    Agreement Acknowledgment
I have read and understand the KACS Bus Behavior Contract and the expectations that come with riding the school bus. I recognize that riding the bus is a privilege, not a right, and that my behavior must reflect the Nguzo Saba and the values of Kuumba Academy at all times.
